How do I clean the gourds?

There are several different ways of cleaning a gourd.

  • You can place the gourd in a big enough container filled with water.  Gourds will float so you will want to weigh them down with something heavy on top to hold the gourds down into the water. Let them soak for 20-30 minutes. Take them out of the water and scrub them with a copper scrubber.  Dollar General and Walmart sell these for a few dollars.  If you find that the gourd has filled with water, drill a small hole in the bottom and drain.

*Another way is to soak the gourds in a black garbage bag*

  • Soak a few towels in warm water and wrap them around your gourds.  Place the bag in a hot sunny area outdoors.  The sun will do the work for you.  Leave them in the bag for a least an hour.

*BEWARE    Gourds are filled with mold spores so always wear a mask when cleaning the inside of a gourd.

We try  to only ship gourds that are thick enough for carving.    Western Kentucky has a fairly long growing season which promotes thick gourd shells.
